Expungement

Expungement

In California, expungement is a way to clean up a criminal record. It allows someone who has finished probation or met other requirements to ask the court to dismiss their conviction. If the court approves, the conviction is updated to show it was dismissed. This can make it easier to get a job, rent a home, or move forward in life. However, some crimes, like serious felonies or certain sexual offenses, cannot be expunged.

Expungement does not completely erase the record, and some government agencies, like law enforcement, can still see the original conviction. But for most things, like job applications, a person can legally say they have not been convicted. To get an expungement, you must fill out forms, pay a fee, and sometimes go to court.
